For the Christmas and new year's holiday in 2009/2010 I went to Morocco for a week before spending 2.5 weeks in Spain, Belgium, Holland, Czech Republic, and Austria before heading back to Japan

The contrasting colours of Chefchaouen. Set high up in mist-filled mountains, and filled with blue and white washed buildings that contrast beautifully with the orange clay of exposed surfaces, Chefchaouen has a unique Disney-like feel to it. However, due to its unfortunate popularity as a spot where marijuana is readily available, which removes a bit of the charm, the town's location isn't the only thing that's high around here.

  • A woman uses her brightly covered scarf to shield herself from the rain as she runs for cover. For a desert country, I certainly never expected that my time in Chefchaouen would be spent entirely under clouds with limitless supplies of rain. Though I don't know the facts, I think it's safe to assume, based on the reactions of the locals, that the storm i experienced was a rare occurance, perhaps once a decade. At nighttime, the power and water supplies were damaged and thus haulted, and the next morning found me stranded on a bus headed north that stalled dangerously close to an overflowing river that would easily wash away its victims without a trace. The escape was through a taxi, shared with a honeymooning Korean couple, that drove carefully through washed out villages, avoided potholes the size of bathtubs all the while. Out the window i was able to spot some fully-clothed locals wading up to their shoulders through the newly formed rivers, and washed out brick walls pouring out onto the roads, but also a spontaneous game of soccer with laughter all around. The resulting delays from the washed out roads and bad weather made for a christmas eve spent in a below-average hotel at the port of Algiceras. Disappointing at the time, but a godsend when compared to the conditions we could easily pass by in a taxi.
