  • 2010 Fire Festival in Kurama, just north of Kyoto. Every year thousands of tourists join the townspeople to throw an event which is touted as one of Japan's 3 most eccentric festivals. Anyone who's stayed from beginning to end will understand just how exciting it is to follow the procession of people carrying shrines and 8 foot tall torches down the street while shouting "sairyou sairei!" the entire way. Though most people return home by about midnight in order to catch the last train, i made the one hour uphill bike ride from Kyoto and managed to enjoy it until the very end.
