Europe 2009-2011

For the Christmas and new year's holiday in 2009/2010 I went to Morocco for a week before spending 2.5 weeks in Spain, Belgium, Holland, Czech Republic, and Austria before heading back to Japan.
In 2011 I had a short business trip to Bucharest in Romania, with a very brief stopover in Amsterdam.

  • Handrail at Plaza De Espana. I like how you can still find these sort of intricate yet not perfectly consistent details, in contrast find in so many places nowadays when machinery is involved in the creation process.
  • A wealth of greenery in such a tight space, suspended about 20m above the ground in Granada, Spain.
  • A church at night in Vienna, Austria. Oddly enough, more than any interest in classical music or theater, I first wanted to go to Vienna because of the hollywood action thriller 'The Peacemaker" starring George Clooney. The movie featured some incredible shots of cars whizzing through the streets of Vienna, climaxing in a game of chicken in one of the old town squares. The place looked beautiful in the movie. My visit here included staying with a friend from Berlin at an apartment that lent to me by a friend from Canada whose uncle inherited the place from Hungarian royalty, a $5 opera, a creepy walk through snow-covered orchards and vineyards, and a clubbing event at a planetarium nearby complete with domed movie theater. Hardly the Vienna you'd expect, which is exactly what i was looking for.
  • A bizarre structure in the streets of Belgium that looks like a game of pick-up-sticks. I spent some time here with a Hungarian friend who graduated from the university at which i work. She lives in Amsterdam, but we spent a couple days in Brussels drinking the best beer in the world, wandering the streets in search of a pissing baby statue, being woken up by a possible drug bust in the neighboring hotel room, and a stroll around the chocolate and beer shops in the morning. As fun as that was, I can only really recommend about a day in Brussels. Nevertheless, the sole purpose of my visit was to obtain chocolate and beer, no more, and with that i managed to nab 9 bottles, including a specatular one called 'Deus' that cost over 20 Euro; a large weight to carry over to Prague, down to Vienna, and back to Japan.

  • A tiny sample of the incredibly detailed textures that paint the insides of La Alhambra in Granada. The entire 2 hours i spent walking the garden i spotted intricacies such as these lining every surface. Even one small piece of this picture would take hours to carve. Unfortunately a picture cannot do even a fraction of the justice a place like this deserves,
